Common stove & cooktop problems we can help with
Gas burner won't light
Food spills and grease often clog the burner ports or soak the igniter so it can't spark. A cracked igniter or a misaligned burner cap can also keep the flame from catching.
Igniter keeps clicking
Moisture from a boil-over around the spark switch is a very common cause of non-stop clicking. If it doesn't dry out, a shorted spark switch or spark module may be the problem.
Electric coil element stays cold
The coil itself may have burned out, or the terminal block it plugs into may be scorched. A failed infinite switch, which controls heat level, can also leave a burner dead.
Glass-top element won't heat or won't shut off
Radiant elements under smooth tops can fail open and stop heating. An element stuck on high usually points to a failed control switch or relay on the board.
Induction zone not recognizing the pan
Induction requires magnetic cookware, so a pan that isn't compatible won't register. If the right cookware still isn't detected, a pan sensor, cooling fan or power board fault is likely.
Weak, yellow or uneven flame
Partly blocked burner ports or an incorrectly seated cap produce a lazy, uneven flame. A yellow flame can indicate an air-to-gas mixture problem that should be inspected by a professional.
Cracked glass cooktop
Impact from a dropped pot or thermal shock can crack the surface. Because the glass covers live electrical elements, a cracked top should not be used until it's replaced.
Repair or replace?
- Stoves and cooktops often serve 13 to 15 years. Igniters, spark switches, coils and infinite switches are typically small, routine repairs.
- When an older smoothtop needs both new glass and a control board, compare the quote with the price of a new cooktop before committing.
- If multiple burners or zones fail at once on an aging unit, or parts are discontinued, replacing tends to be the smarter long-term move.
Safety first
- If you smell gas, turn off any burner controls only if it's safe to reach them, then leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not light matches or flip switches.
- Stop using a cracked glass cooktop and switch off its breaker until it's repaired.
- Never leave a burner that won't shut off unattended. Turn off power to the unit at the breaker.
