Common freezer problems we can help with
Freezer not freezing
Dirty condenser coils make it hard for the unit to release heat, so the cabinet warms up. A failed evaporator fan, a bad start relay or a compressor issue can also stop the cooling cycle.
Heavy frost build-up
On frost-free uprights, a failed defrost heater, defrost timer or defrost thermostat lets ice accumulate on the evaporator. A torn door gasket or a lid that doesn't seal lets humid air in on any model.
Running nonstop
A unit that never cycles off is often fighting dirty condenser coils or a leaky door seal. A failing thermostat or a low refrigerant charge can keep the compressor working constantly.
Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling
A worn condenser or evaporator fan motor often causes buzzing and rattling. Repeated clicking can point to a start relay that's trying and failing to start the compressor.
Water pooling inside or underneath
A clogged defrost drain line can send meltwater onto the floor or into the bottom of the cabinet. On chest freezers, a drain plug left open or a cracked drain tube is a common cause.
Freezer too cold
A thermostat stuck in the closed position keeps the compressor running past the target temperature. Control board or sensor faults can cause the same over-cooling.
Freezer won't power on
Besides a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet, a failed thermostat or control board can stop everything. If the light works but nothing runs, the compressor's start components are a likely culprit.
Repair or replace?
- Standalone freezers often last 11 to 20 years, and chest models frequently outlive uprights. Fans, gaskets, thermostats and defrost parts are worth repairing at almost any age.
- Sealed-system work such as a compressor replacement or refrigerant leak is a major job. On an older freezer, compare that quote against the price of a comparable new unit.
- If the cabinet is rusting through or the insulation is waterlogged, replacing the freezer is usually the better investment.
Safety first
- If the freezer stops cooling, keep the door or lid closed. A full freezer can keep food frozen longer when it stays sealed.
- If water is pooling near an outlet, switch off the circuit breaker before unplugging or moving the unit.
- Throw away food that has thawed and warmed above safe temperatures; when in doubt, follow USDA food safety guidance.

Freezer repair FAQ
Do you help with chest freezers in a garage or basement?
Yes. Chest and upright freezers in garages, basements and utility rooms are covered.
How long will food stay frozen if my freezer stops?
A full, closed freezer usually holds temperature longer than a half-empty one. Keep it shut and call promptly.
Why is my freezer frosting up so fast?
Most often it's a door seal problem or a defrost system failure. A technician can test which one.
Should I defrost my freezer before the technician comes?
Not unless the technician asks you to. Frost patterns can help diagnose the problem.
Can garage temperatures affect my freezer?
Yes. Very cold or very hot garages can affect how some freezers run. Mention where it's located when you call.
