Common dishwasher problems we can help with
Dishwasher won't drain
A clogged filter, a kinked drain hose or a blocked air gap keeps dirty water in the tub. When the path is clear, a failed drain pump or a faulty check valve is usually the reason water stays behind.
Dishes come out dirty or cloudy
Clogged spray arm holes and a worn wash pump reduce water pressure, so food stays on the plates. A failing water inlet valve that lets in too little water, or a heating element that no longer warms it, produces the same poor results.
Leaking onto the floor
A worn door gasket is the most common source, especially on older machines. Cracked spray arms, a loose pump seal or too much suds from the wrong detergent can also push water past the door.
Dishwasher won't start
A faulty door latch or latch switch keeps the machine from recognizing the door is closed, so nothing runs. A tripped thermal fuse, a failed control board or a broken touch panel can also leave the unit completely dead.
Dishes still wet at the end
Most dishwashers dry with a heating element or a fan-assisted system, and a burned-out element is a frequent cause of wet dishes. Rinse aid running out makes the problem noticeably worse.
Strange noises during the cycle
Grinding often means glass or a pit is caught in the pump area. A loud hum with no water movement points to a seized wash pump motor, while rattling is usually a loose spray arm or dishes touching each other.
Door won't latch or falls open
A broken latch assembly keeps the door from closing, and worn springs or hinges let it drop too fast. Both are common, replaceable parts.
Detergent dispenser won't open
A worn dispenser latch or a failed wax motor keeps the cup shut, so detergent never reaches the wash. Dishes then come out greasy even though the cycle ran.
Repair or replace?
- Dishwashers generally last around 9 to 12 years. Pumps, valves, gaskets, latches and spray arms are routine repairs well worth doing on a machine inside that range.
- If the tub itself is cracked or the machine needs a major part such as a wash motor and it's near the end of its lifespan, compare the quote against a new unit before committing.
- Stainless-tub and higher-end models are often worth repairing longer, since their replacement cost is considerably higher.
Safety first
- If the dishwasher leaks, turn off its water supply valve, usually under the sink, and wipe up standing water to protect the floor.
- If water has reached the power cord or outlet, don't touch the plug. Switch off the circuit breaker for the kitchen first.
- Never open the door mid-cycle on a hot wash; steam and hot water can scald.

Dishwasher repair FAQ
Do you cover built-in and portable dishwashers?
Yes. Technicians in our network work on standard built-in units, drawer-style models and portables.
Why is there standing water in the bottom?
A small amount in the sump is normal. A visible pool across the tub floor means a drainage problem that a technician should check.
Is it worth repairing an older dishwasher?
Often, yes. Many failures are inexpensive parts like pumps, valves and gaskets. Ask for a quote before deciding.
Can a leaking dishwasher damage my kitchen?
Yes. Slow leaks can ruin flooring and cabinets over time, so it's best to call as soon as you notice moisture.
What should I do before the appointment?
Empty the dishes, clear the cabinet under the sink if you can, and note any error codes or when the problem started.
