Common refrigerator problems we can help with

  • Refrigerator not cooling enough

Dirty condenser coils make the compressor work harder and cool less, and they're the first thing a technician checks. Beyond that, a failed evaporator fan, a stuck damper between the freezer and fresh-food section or a weak compressor can all leave the fridge warm while the freezer seems fine.

  • Freezer cold, fridge warm

Cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food section, so this pattern usually means the evaporator fan has failed or the air passage is blocked by frost. A defrost system failure is the most common reason frost chokes that passage.

  • Water leaking inside or onto the floor

A clogged defrost drain sends melt water down into the crisper drawers instead of the drain pan. Leaks at the front often trace back to a cracked water inlet valve, a loose filter housing or a damaged water line feeding the ice maker.

  • Ice maker not making ice

A frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve or a worn ice maker module are the usual causes. Sometimes the freezer simply isn't cold enough, since most ice makers only cycle when the compartment is at the right temperature.

  • Loud buzzing, clicking or rattling

A clicking start relay points to a compressor struggling to start. Buzzing can come from a failing condenser fan motor, and rattling is often a loose drain pan or an item touching the fan blade.

  • Frost building up on the back wall

Heavy frost on the freezer's back panel almost always means the automatic defrost system has failed. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control timer is typically the part at fault.

  • Refrigerator runs constantly

A unit that never cycles off may have dirty coils, a torn door gasket letting warm air in, or a refrigerant issue. A technician can measure temperatures and pressures to tell the difference.

  • Door doesn't seal properly

A warped or hardened gasket lets cold air escape and forces the compressor to run longer. Misaligned doors or worn hinges cause the same symptom and are usually a straightforward adjustment.

Repair or replace?

  • Most refrigerators last around 10 to 15 years. Fans, thermostats, defrost parts, valves and gaskets are routine, affordable repairs on units inside that range.
  • Sealed-system work, such as compressor or refrigerant repairs, costs more. If the unit is past ten years and the quote involves the sealed system, compare it carefully against the price of a new refrigerator.
  • Built-in and high-end models are often worth repairing well beyond the usual lifespan, because replacement involves cabinetry work and a much higher purchase price.

Safety first

  • If food has been above safe temperatures for more than a few hours, follow USDA food safety guidance and discard perishables when in doubt.
  • If you smell burning or see scorch marks near the outlet or cord, unplug the refrigerator and keep the doors closed to hold the cold.
  • Never chip at frost with a knife or sharp tool; a punctured evaporator line can ruin the appliance.

Refrigerator repair FAQ

Do you cover all refrigerator styles?

Yes. French-door, side-by-side, top- and bottom-freezer and many built-in models are covered by independent providers in our network.

How long will my food stay safe if the fridge stops?

A closed refrigerator keeps food cold for roughly four hours, and a full freezer holds temperature much longer. Keep the doors shut and call promptly.

Is a noisy refrigerator an emergency?

Usually not, but new clicking or buzzing can mean the compressor is struggling. It's worth a call before the unit stops cooling altogether.

Can ice makers and water dispensers be repaired?

Yes. Valves, fill tubes, filters and ice maker modules are among the most common refrigerator repairs.

What should I do before the technician arrives?

Clear the area around the refrigerator, note any error codes and know roughly when the problem started. Don't empty the freezer unless asked.
